We hope you’re all enjoying your summer breaks. Lounging by the pool, catching up on some DIY or considering your next career move?!?

With hot weather predicted across the EU this summer we’ve noticed more than ever that the maritime space is taking time out and recharging ready for the busier months ahead.

Team SYR have been beavering away throughout the summer period thus far and celebrated our busiest July EVER a few weeks ago. With 90% of our sectors remaining busy this year, we’ve seen a continued stream of new roles coming down the pipeline and our recruiters have been kept engaged with some exciting search projects.

August traditionally sees us pivot our approach to recruitment to focus on developing our candidate base. With employers and employees alike taking time out of the day to day, we always see an uptick in jobseekers registering with us and being more receptive to chatting about some of our hottest roles. It’s a great time to get your CV updated and to take our advice on how to be the most attractive profile on the shortlist.

As we reach the mid-point of August, our attention is also drawn to planning out the show season. With attendance planned at Southampton, Cannes and Monaco, we’re starting to invite both employers and jobseekers to meet and filling up our diaries.

August is Maritime Decarbonisation Month
We take our industry seriously and with the maritime world contributing to 3% of global emissions, decarbonisation has become a major topic for engineers and shipbuilders when it comes to reducing outputs and improving economy. With countless consultancies globally working on solutions, over the coming weeks we’re going to share with you a selection of employers, technologies and live roles within this exciting space.

Our Head of Technical Recruitment, Alisha O’Flanagan, is spearheading our work in this area and actively looking to connect with naval architects, engineers, data scientists and more who have an interest in the future of our seas.

TEAM UPDATES

ED | CEO | ed@sy-r.com

Design & Engineering has remained steady over this past month. A small number of new roles have come online, so my focus has remained on candidate generation, seeking out the talent in layout design, creative interior styling and FF&E.

I’m still actively encouraging those, particularly at a senior level, with an interest in new roles to reach out and discuss some of the roles within the Eurozone.

Layout Designer – NL
My search continues for a highly talented designer capable of taking on complex GA development. When you’re designing in the 100m space the role of a layout designer is critical in bringing together the needs of an owner whilst also maintaining adherence to the larger yacht codes.

I’m seeking someone from either the yacht or cruise world capable of taking on such technical challenges!

This month is all about green technologies taking the show – the leisure industry has remained quiet and with the superyacht industry entering the summer season and the natural slow down, new green technologies are ramping up.

With new clients onboarded in the maritime decarbonisation world, and with more opportunities on the horizon, we are now seeing the major shift we have been anticipating into green technology.

Naval Architect / Integration Engineer
I am currently working on a confidential project for a new business in the maritime sector who is looking to build out their performance, data and innovation core.

They are on a mission to support their sister yard to achieve net zero before 2050 in the shipping industry. The business is creating performance and simulation tools to compare various decarbonisation products which are currently on the market within the shipping industry.

They are seeking the brightest engineers to support in both the creation and then the running of the software – the data will then be used to advise their shipyard in the mission for net zero by 2050.

The is a unique opportunity for the right individual to analyse emerging technologies, review market trends and support in shaping the product market through technical input and the expertise derived by real-time analytics.

The first month of Q3 has concluded and I have walked away with my largest billing in less than four weeks. It’s been a very prosperous and exciting start to the quarter with some large projects finally coming through, giving me a consistent desk beyond mid-year.

Steering away from leisure marine and looking at other markets is a slow process but for a better understanding and a more diverse desk, I am confident it will prove successful throughout the rest of the year.
