Position Overview

The Yacht Refit Engineer is responsible for planning, overseeing, and executing all technical aspects of yacht refit, repair, and upgrade projects. This role ensures that mechanical, electrical, structural, and systems-related work is completed to the highest standards of safety, performance, and craftsmanship. The engineer works closely with captains, project managers, shipyards, contractors, and classification societies to deliver projects on time and within budget.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Project Planning & Management

  • Develop refit scope, specifications, and technical documentation based on client requirements, class standards, and vessel condition.
  • Prepare and manage project schedules, budgets, and resource allocations.
  • Coordinate with suppliers, contractors, shipyards, and internal teams to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies.

 

Technical Oversight

  • Oversee installation, repair, and testing of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, HVAC, and auxiliary systems.
  • Inspect hull, superstructure, and structural components for integrity and compliance.
  • Review engineering drawings, schematics, and technical proposals.
  • Ensure adherence to maritime regulations, class requirements, and OEM specifications.

 

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Conduct regular progress inspections and quality-control checks throughout the refit period.
  • Verify commissioning, sea trials, and system tests.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, logs, as-built drawings, and technical reports.
  • Liaise with classification societies and relevant regulatory authorities.

 

Stakeholder Communication

  • Provide regular project updates to the owner, captain, and management.
  • Communicate issues, delays, or technical challenges promptly with proposed solutions.
  • Foster strong working relationships with vendors and shipyard teams.

 

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Strong background in yacht refit, shipyard operations, or marine engineering—typically 3–10+ years depending on level.
  • In-depth knowledge of yacht systems: propulsion, generators, electrical, hydraulics, HVAC, plumbing, AV/IT, and safety equipment.
  • Familiarity with classification societies (ABS, Lloyd’s, RINA, DNV), ISM/ISPS standards, and maritime regulations.
  • Proven ability to manage complex technical projects with multiple stakeholders.

 

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical manuals.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency with project management software and CAD tools (preferred).
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced shipyard environment.

 

Working Conditions

  • Shipyard-based with occasional travel to vessels, suppliers, or sea trial locations.
  • May require extended hours during peak project phases.
  • Exposure to industrial environments, heavy machinery, and marine conditions.
