Junior Design Engineer
I’m currently representing a highly agile and forward-thinking naval architecture studio based in the heart of the Solent. This isn't a traditional corporate design office; it’s a high-output collective that bridges the gap between raw performance engineering and refined aesthetic styling. They are the quiet authority behind some of the industry’s most ambitious multihull projects and performance refits. I’m looking for a Junior Designer who possesses a rare blend: the technical rigour of an engineer combined with a genuine creative flair for yacht styling and 3D development.
The studio is currently navigating a period of strategic growth, driven by a surge in demand for high-performance catamarans, custom superyacht tenders, and radical "upcycling" refit projects.
This is a new role designed to support a team that is currently "at capacity" with award-winning work. You won't be stuck on a single repetitive task; you’ll be coming in to support the scale-up phase of several new-build and refit programmes where the pace is fast and the technical bars are set high.
Replacing the standard list of duties, this role offers a deep dive into the full lifecycle of yacht design. You will be working under the skin of the projects, translating conceptual sketches into precise engineering reality.
- The Toolkit: You’ll be heavily involved in 3D concept development and structural drafting, primarily utilising Rhino and AutoCAD to develop complex surfaces and composite details.
- The Scope: Your desk will cover everything from initial GA (General Arrangement) plans and 3D modelling to structural optimisation and systems integration.
- The Challenge: Working with advanced materials like carbon and lightweight composites, you’ll be tasked with balancing weight efficiency against the aesthetic requirements of high-end yachting.
The team is comprised of avid sailors and kiteboarders - specialists who actually spend time on the vessels they design. It’s a collaborative, "heads-up" studio where ideas are debated openly, and young designers are encouraged to take ownership of their work. In this setting, you aren't just a number; you are an integral part of a small, talented collective where your personal input on styling and design will be seen on the water within months, not years.
The Requirement
- Degree-qualified in Naval Architecture, Yacht Design, or a related Engineering discipline.
- 1–2 years of defined marine industry experience (post-grad or placement).
- Proficiency in 3D modelling (Rhino) and 2D drafting (AutoCAD) is essential.
- A portfolio that demonstrates "creative flair"—we need to see your ability to sketch and style, not just your ability to calculate.
