Who’s ready for a yacht show?

If you would like to receive this update as a monthly email register here.

It’s September already and this means only one thing, European yacht shows! By the time you read this we’ll be concluding the Cannes Yachting Festival and be a week out from the Monaco Yacht Show. With some incredible new yachts on show across these events, we’re excited to see some of the latest vessels to launch, including Kismet and Renaissance (a yacht that SYR worked with to recruit into the build team).

With Simon and I hitting the principality, we’ll be attending a host of exclusive events at the show and on-hand to meet with you to discuss your hiring or career focussed requirements.

We also welcome our first sponsor to the SYR Newsletter. MIMO Connect and their ETO-focussed recruitment brand Robertsons ETOs are coming on board as our sponsors for a number of coming editions of the newsletter. We’re also working with them on an exciting MYS collaboration, which you’ll see in person as you walk around the yacht show in a couple of weeks time.

For those of you that don’t already know our new sponsor, we sat down with Jason, owner of the business with his wife Nicci, to find out more about the brand and why they’re considered leaders at what they do! You can read the full interview here.

Looking to the recruitment world, August was typically fairly quiet until late in the month. Since this point however, it’s safe to say that things have gone crazy, with a wide range of opportunities coming along specifically within the shipyard and yacht management spaces.

The final quarter of the year is usually our busiest both in terms of placements and in terms of new roles coming online, so head to the website and check out the latest and greatest we have available.

As always, we’re here to offer advice and practical recruitment support so if you would like to know more about our services, discuss your career or how we can help grow your business, please do get in touch.

It’s been an enjoyable but hectic few weeks on my desk, with a couple of major new clients taking up much of my time across the shipyard sector, from skilled tradespeople through to senior project management.

The market is buoyant across Europe, which is great to see and it’s showing no sign of slowing down! I’m looking forward to really getting back into the thick of discussions with my design and engineering client base during September and October, likely showcasing some great new roles.

Sales Manager – Superyacht Refit
We’re looking for a serial networker with a strong history in working with shipyards, management companies and owners to join a leading shipyard group in a sales management role.

The post offers a lot of flexibility and huge earning opportunities for the right person. If you’re Europe based and keen on a new challenge, get in touch!

August is a traditionally slow month for new opportunities, but now we’re into September and show season, it’s full steam ahead for new roles. I’m working on some charter opportunities in the EU and US so do reach out if you are considering a change. I’ve also got a very nice role in Palma for a Yacht Ops Manager so drop me a line if you’d like further information. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at MYS!

Yacht Operations Manager – Palma de Mallorca
Are you a Captain looking to come ashore? Or perhaps you’ve already made the transition and are looking for the next career move? If so, this could be a great role to consider.

The client is a boutique management company with a growing fleet along with several construction projects under management and, due to ongoing growth, they’d like to appoint a Yacht Operations Manager to oversee the fleet.

With 14 vessels currently under management in the sub 30m range and running mini ISM, you’ll have excellent compliance knowledge along with a good technical understanding, experience in crewing services and a broad understanding of general operational and logistics support across the fleet. Working alongside the MD, you’ll help guide and grow the managed service offering, delivering a 1st class experience to owners, Captains and other stakeholders.

This role would suit a Captain with a 500gt ticket or an ambitious Junior YM looking to grow into a full YM position. Onboard experience is required however.

Jason Robertson in the SYR Hotseat

  • Posted

We’re really pleased to welcome our new sponsors MIMO Connect and so to introduce them, our CEO Ed sat down with the brains behind MIMO Connect, Jason Robertson, to find out more about the authority in all things superyacht communications.

Jason, welcome to the SYR hotseat.

Thank you very much Ed!

MIMO Connect has become a well known name in the superyacht sector in a short period of time. For those who don’t already know you, can you sum up in a nutshell the product/service offering from MIMO?

MIMO stands for Multiple In Multiple Out, which in the world of connectivity, means we deliver ultimate diversity and performance. The business’ heritage and focus is firmly based on supporting the maritime industry where we have built an enviable reputation as the ‘go to’ partners for superyacht data connectivity.

You’ve moved away from the more plug-and-play setups that your competition offer to the market, instead creating your own domes and internals. Do you feel that this is what puts you above the rest in terms of connectivity and reliability?

Absolutely, MIMO Connect developed the first and original cellular 4G/5G Dome, developed during Covid. The groundbreaking MIMO technology is EMC tested and approved, providing a new novel idea of incorporating all cellular antennas neatly within one enclosure, avoiding expensive labour-intensive coax cable runs.

The immediate benefit with having a MIMO Dome is that the full cellular signal reaches the cellular modem located inside the dome providing the fastest and most reliable connection possible.

Our partnership with the best maritime modem and antenna provider allows us to not only offer reliable balanced connections but also a full three year warranty. In addition, we are also very proud of the top quality maritime approved IOT multi network SIM cards we offer.

MIMO have become a bit of an authority on the Starlink products, recently testing the Starlink Mini. Do you see this as the future for onboard connectivity across the world’s oceans, or are there still areas where a backup will be needed? Do you think Starlink will ever really be competed against on the global market?

MIMO Connect joined the Starlink Beta Better Than Nothing program early on in July 2020 and received its first Starlink Terminal “Dishy” in Dec 2020. We’ve been directly involved from the beginning, providing SpaceX with explanations and advice on how Starlink could be used within the maritime sector and see this as being one of the biggest technology improvements since VSAT was introduced in 1986.

Starlink is most definitely here to stay and from its infancy has managed to maintain an impressive onboarding cadence, rapidly becoming a serious player in data connectivity. In no small part, Starlink’s success can be attributed to the fact that generally it works very well, offers very low latency (approx. 20ms – 60ms) with incredible fibre like speeds of over 300Mbps down and 20Mbps up.

Starlink has competition with cellular 4G/5G connectivity on land and near shore/marinas and there are other Low Earth Orbit constellations already available and there are more coming, so they won’t necessarily always have it their way.

Some schools of thought predict that Starlink will be the end of Cellular, but that could be hasty as Cellular does offer comparable download speeds but much higher upload speeds compared with Starlink, and right now Cellular 4G/5G pricing is, on the whole, more affordable.

Where is MIMO headed next when it comes to target markets and the tech that you use? How do you intend to maintain your foothold as a market leader?

MIMO Connect strives to lead the industry through innovation and adopting new connection technologies as they evolve. MIMO Connect are already geared up to support clients who require robust and reliable connectivity at any location so expanding into other verticals outside of the maritime industry is a natural progression.

MIMO Connect have seen much interest and some early success supplying our products and services to security, emergency services and transport companies.

Lastly, with the autumn shows already well underway, do you have anything exciting planned to showcase the MIMO Connect brand to the wider industry?

Always, MIMO Connect is constantly developing and prototyping new products and the business is very excited with the opportunities coming out of the rapid technological changes. We look forward to launching and showcasing these solutions at upcoming events.

MIMO Connect have a great Crew SIM collaboration with ACREW which goes live at the Monaco Yacht Show and ‘watch this space,’ and follow our socials for something truly game changing that is in trials right now and which will be launched at METS (Marine Exhibition Trade Show) in November 2024.

Thanks Jason, that all sounds very exciting and we’re looking forward to seeing our jointly branded SYR, MIMO Connect and Robertson ETOs taxi doing the rounds during the Monaco Yacht Show!

Building Yachts Sustainably. Why aren’t we doing more?

  • Posted June 27, 2024

For decades now, we’ve been building yachts, personal watercraft and commercial vessels from GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) – A hideous mixture of tiny glass fibres and chemical resins, combined to produce a lightweight and strong composite end product that floats and doesn’t allow water ingress.

The product that we’ve used to build our boats for all these years however, is not biodegradable, recyclable or reusable. Around the world there are damaged or unused boat hulls and parts littering boatyards, storage facilities and even the bottoms of our rivers, lakes and seas.

Yet within the world of boatbuilding there are very few who are trying to bring about any form of change when it comes to making small boatbuilding any more sustainable. The general consensus seems to be that nobody wants to be the first to change, or to invest in the technology required so that vessels can either be broken down or their major components reused in the future. Whilst the environmental impact versus major issues, such as carbon emissions, is small, finding a way to break down or recycle yachts will give our industry one hell of a profile boost.

The technology to build cleaner, more sustainable boats has been around for at least the past five years. Companies such as Baltic Yachts have been introducing cleaner and more recyclable fibre into their yacht builds for a period now. At the time, the shipyard received acclaim for its efforts, but we’ve heard little from them or indeed the wider market about the sustainability improvements that the use of hemps and flaxes has made to their overall environmental impact or indeed if there have been any negative outcomes from their use.

Likewise, Northern Light Composites (name check) have built a 100% recyclable Optimist. Made from fully recycled materials and, in itself, fully recyclable. Carbon emissions of the overall process are unknown, but the entire build leaves no trace and can be recycled once more come end of life.

The UK is a major boatbuilder in composites but seems to show no effort in developing cleaner composite solutions, instead relying on European innovators to come up with the technology that they will ever-so-slowly adapt to.

So how do we encourage the adoption of new, cleaner boatbuilding tech?

RegulationThe obvious suggestion would be the introduction of regulation on UK boatbuilding. Shipyards must use specific technologies or products during the manufacturing process, proving wastage and showing its reduction – A heavy-handed approach that likely is too much, too quickly and also not enforceable.

Green Credits Introduce either tax credits or innovation grants to allow businesses and shipyards to work on innovations in composite manufacture, to trial new products and to work out how to break down existing hulls with technology that will leave minimal by-production.

PartnershipsEncouraging composite pioneers to engage closely with shipyards, to work with their R&D departments on a common goal to make boatbuilding more sustainable.

Taxation Punish those who aren’t showing intiative or a drive towards cleaner production. Tax based on value of waste output per annum or on numbers of vessels sold, to encourage reduction of carbon and physical footprint.

The Consumer – The consumer needs to be more forceful when it comes to their expectations. If a buyer is happy with a high emission plastic yacht, the yachtbuilder will keep building it. If the buyer starts to hold the shipyard to account, they are forced to change their ways. A futile but idealistic expectation.

As the world moves into a new phase, with a huge pressure on reducing the footprint we create on our planet, we all need to be making the effort to clean up our act. As an industry, we need to work together, we need to innovate and we need to invest in our futures, driving the morally correct outcomes, not the outcomes that simply result in the best profits.

Working with an Agency – A Candidate’s Guide to Do’s and Don’ts

  • Posted May 23, 2024

You’re considering a move. Maybe your current role is a bit stale, the relationship with your line manager has broken down or you’re looking for a pay increase.

You notice a role advertised through an agency so you send an application. A Recruiter calls you back to talk through the position and your experience, with a view to put you forwards to the role and hopefully secure you an interview.

As Recruiters, we work with thousands of candidates a year, hundreds of CV submissions and interviews. A lot of the time the relationship with the candidate is a positive one, but sometimes problems can arise. The following article suggests a number of things you should and shouldn’t do when working with a Recruitment Agent, to help you secure the highest level of success.

DO

Sell yourselfAs with a direct application, it’s imperative you sell yourself when applying for a position. Highlight your strengths and key achievements. We write a covering letter on your behalf so giving us as much great content for it will do your application wonders.

Lay out your expectationsWhen applying, take into consideration the salary and terms that you’d expect from a role and tell us. We share this information directly with the employer, so any information you provide us helps all parties understand the boundaries.

Be honestThis one speaks for itself. It’ll very quickly catch you out if you’re dishonest during the process. Gaping holes in experience or capability will be noticed.

Take our adviceAs Recruiters, most of the time we have extensive experience when it comes to how to propose you for a job, whether you’d be successful or whether your expectations are unrealistic.

Check out an agency’s reputation/ability – Given that recruitment is mostly unregulated, make sure you’re working with someone you can trust. Ask questions, read testimonials.

DON’T

Apply for the same role through multiple agenciesOf course, sometimes mistakes can be made and you may not know you’re applying for the same position, but we see on a daily basis an applicant thinking they have a higher chance of success by applying for a job through multiple means.

LieOn so many levels, deceit rarely results in success. Lying on a CV, during a recruiter call or at interview, will get you found out.

Change your expectations mid-processAgain all too common, a candidate will decide mid-process that their salary demands have increased by £10,000 or the role they were told is office based they now want to work remotely. Going into the process aware of where you stand is key.

Approach the employer directly (unless agreed)Our experts are here to help you not hinder you. Keeping a single line of communication avoids confusion. A seamless process relies on solid control and clear communication.

Shout at usAfter all, we’re here to help!

Follow these simple steps and your experience with a Recruiter should be a good one!

As a Designer or Engineer, Why Would I Want to Work in the Yachting Sector?

  • Posted April 26, 2024

Many of us know who and what we want to be growing up. Astronauts, Fighter Pilots, Chefs… the list is endless.

However, there is a huge throughput in secondary and higher education of those who want to be a Designer or an Engineer. Some know exactly what they want to design or engineer, others just want to be designing or engineering.

I wanted to put together a short article highlighting why a budding individual may want to look at marine/yachting over and above other transport industries such as aerospace or automotive. I may be biased, but the marine world has a huge amount going for it and is highly worth considering.

Creativity

True creativity in many sectors has continued to dwindle, mainly due to increased restrictions, rules and regulations to govern safety and meet the standards imposed by global markets and rule-setters.

Take a car for example. The automotive world is governed in thousands of areas. Safety (both occupant and pedestrian), visibility, weight, performance and economy. All these requirements mean that whilst a car can carry a different badge and have a few different angles, each vehicle type has clear similarities. Due to the inherent series-build nature and tight margins, a car will always be designed a certain way and likely by huge teams of hundreds, with each Designer or Engineer tasked with an incredibly narrow design brief.

Take a boat however and we face a lot less restriction. We, of course, have safety pressures such as making a yacht watertight and with correct fire safety. However, at the same time we can be highly creative in the end product. Take for example the 24m rule within the world of series built yachts. Global shipyards have taken a rule and exploited it in so many ways that the end products are vastly different and can cater to the needs of a diverse customer base.

Moreover, design teams are a whole lot smaller. Teams of 50 or less are tasked with designing a yacht from a blank sheet, meaning that Designers and Engineers are given a lot of flexibility when it comes to their assigned area of each project.

Innovation

Alongside the opportunity to be creative, the ability to innovate isn’t far behind. In other sectors, we’ve seen major innovation in terms of propulsion, interiors, electronics and more. Marine remains decades behind many other sectors, and this leaves the door open for huge leaps in technology and innovation.

In the past five years alone, we’ve seen technology come to the fore such as wind assisted shipping, totally new hull design and big leaps into autonomous drive systems. In some ways we’re not far off reinventing the wheel in a sector that has existed for hundreds of years, predating planes, trains and automobiles.

More and more marine tech firms are launching and we’re seeking a migration away from the ‘baby step’ engineer sectors of automotive and aerospace into a world where an Engineer can really make a difference in how an industry functions.

If you’re an Engineer with a wild imagination, this could be the world for you.

Working on-site with manufacturing

In yachting, many of the major yards have an engineering office on site and this is surely one of the holy grails for a Designer or Engineer. This is an opportunity to see your work come to life, to support the people manufacturing your work and to make real-time changes to improve ergonomics or to improve in terms of cost, quality or delivery.

Likewise, design and engineering in yachting breeds collaboration with both internal and external colleagues. A chance to work closely across multiple departments and drive forwards new ideas, bring together diverse expertise and work towards a common goal. Many yards will work on full scale mock-ups of projects, giving Engineers so much scope to evolve.

So, if you’re looking to work in a world where you’ll be able to fully exploit your skills and ability, maybe it’s time you considered looking at our wonderful world!  Get in touch and be a part of something exciting!
